INTRODUCING: JONAS BURGERT

“Laengst Vertraut” (2008)

Berlin-based painter Jonas Burgert first exhibited at Haunch of Venison during Frieze 2009, the culmination of a series of impressive solo exhibitions that has seen the artist go from strength to strength since his days studying at the Universität der Künste. Burgert claims inspiration from cultures and ideologies as diverse as Egypt and India, be it through his own geographically far-flung voyages, or by way of literature and postcards.

The subject-matter on show in Burgert’s paintings is an equally assorted sundry, consisting of fearsome creatures that range from the human to the fantastical, each with uniquely crafted characteristics that suggest that all this is taking place somewhere a little closer to home than the otherworldly environment the luminescent colours and skewed spatial perception might initially suggest. Not too dissimilar from some of the psy-fi imagery Unkle fans will be so familiar with then! It all points to a match made, well… not in this world, at least. We can’t wait to see what sort of imagery Burgert will come up with at Daydreaming With… James Lavelle, but in the meantime, check out the German painter’s official website HERE.
